In 2025, Evergreen Hospice, along with our community partners, will begin the greatest and most important project in the history of our organization: to build and launch the first community hospice residence. Nestled in the tranquil nature of the Rouge National Park, our three-bed hospice will provide compassionate care to palliative patients and serve every resident of Markham, Stouffville, and Thornhill with understanding, grace and dignity.

We envision a tranquil space for patients and their loved ones. The proposed hospice site lies on the edge of Rouge National Urban Park.

Evergreen is a non-profit, charitable organization that provides supportive services and compassionate care to people impacted by life-threatening illness or grief across our diverse communities of Markham, Stouffville and Thornhill. Our current services include serious illness support groups, activity based programming, in-home volunteer support, caregiver support group, counselling, bereavement support, and workshops on topics such as self-care, communication and making difficult decisions. All our services are provided free of charge and supported by volunteers, generous donations and limited government funding. In 2025, we are embarking on our largest project in organization history, to build a hospice residence and expand our services to include hospice residence for end of life care.

Hospice care aims to improve quality of life for those living with a life limiting illness and their families and caregivers, and also provide support to those grieving loss of their loved one.
Community hospices, like Evergreen, provide care programs such as support groups, counselling services and in-home volunteer support.
Hospice residence is a home-like accommodation where people come to live their final days or weeks of life. It allows caregivers to hand over the burden of symptom management and personal care to a skilled interprofessional team, so that caregivers can focus on being a family member or a friend.

While most people would prefer to die at home, the last days and weeks of life can require intensive 24 hour personal care and symptom management, which presents a significant physical and emotional burden on families and loved ones. Hospice residence is a home-like environment that allows families and loved ones to be present, while offloading the intimate personal care or management of distressing symptoms to a skilled interdisciplinary hospice team.
Unfortunately hospice residence does not exist in Markham, Stouffville or Thornhill. Patients and families are currently faced with the decision to provide the end of life care at home, leave the community to a hospice residence outside the area, or apply for a limited spot at our local hospital’s palliative care unit.
We are building a hospice residence to close the gap in end of life care in our community.
Evergreen has been serving Markham, Stouffville and Thornhill for over 35 years with our in-home hospice care and support programs for families experiencing loss and grief - and with this hospice residence project, Evergreen will be able to serve our community in a brand-new and impactful way.

Evergreen Hospice is proud to announce that the Ministry of Health has allocated funding for three hospice residence beds, marking a groundbreaking achievement in our 35-year journey of serving the communities of Markham, Stouffville, and Thornhill. This milestone represents a long-anticipated dream finally realized, bringing dedicated residence palliative care to the region for the first time.
Each of the three beds comes with an annual funding allocation of approximately $150,000. This funding will directly support the clinical staffing required to provide exceptional care for individuals utilizing these beds, ensuring they receive compassionate, high-quality support during their most vulnerable moments.
While the government provides operational funding for the hospice, the community must raise the funds to build and furnish the hospice. Evergreen’s goal is to raise $2.5 million to build the hospice.

No, there are no hospice residences currently operating in Markham, Stouffville or Thornhill. Those seeking hospice residence care from our community are transferred to hospices in nearby communities, such as Richmond Hill, Newmarket, Vaughan, Scarborough and Port Perry. Evergreen plans to build a 3 bed hospice in Markham, the first for our community.
